Our History
The Rose of Sharon Church of God In Christ was founded in the 1950's by the late Superintendent T. R. Harris. The Church began on Potter Street and moved to several locations throughout the city of Saginaw before finally settling at 2023 Walnut Street. It was decided in 1982 that the Church needed a larger and better sanctuary. In 1983, Elder Louis C. Knox Sr. was appointed pastor of Rose of Sharon. With few funds and a very small congregation, an intense drive to build a new church was begun by Eld. Knox.
With less than $11,000.00 in the church treasury, Eld. Knox began to ring forth. "We are going to build a church." Land was secured to build upon and the church went to the bank for a loan to build the church. The bank said NO! Your membership is too small. The church did not give up. After raising more money and gaining new members, Eld. Knox went back to the bank a second time. Again the bank said NO! Still, Eld. Knox and the church refused to give up. Eld. Knox decided that with or without the bank, we would build God a house.
It was decided to use what funds the church had to go as far as it could in building a church. Eld. Knox said, "We are going to go as far as we can and depend upon God to finish it." Work on a new church was started and progressed steadily. After framing in the new building, Eld. Knox was led to go back to the bank a third time. He showed the bank what the Church had already done with the few members it had. The bank was amazed that such a small group could have gotten this far and still have over $100,000.00 in its treasury. This time the bank said YES! They even conceded that the Churches Of God In Christ are the largest fund raisers.
In August of 1989, the Saints of Rose Of Sharon entered their new facility. In June of 1993, the church burned the mortgage and today we are totally debt free from all responsibilities of this building, its contents, and the land. It is our vision to build a new sanctuary and youth activity center that will be totally debt free. With God, all things are possible! God continues to bless and prosper the church.
